Bold and inspiring profiles of the pioneers, champions and future heroines of women's soccer around the world.

Women's soccer has come a long way. The first organized games on record -- which took place three hundred years ago in the Scottish Highlands -- were exhibition matches, where single women played against married women while available men looked on, seeking a potential mate.

Today, champions like Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, Brazil's Marta and China's Sun Wen, have inspired girls around the world to pick up the beautiful game for love of the sport. Inevitably, given the hardships and discrimination they face, women who play soccer professionally are so much more than elite athletes. They are survivors, campaigners, political advocates, feminists, LGBTQ activists, working moms, staunch opponents of racial discrimination and inspirational role models for many.

Based on original interviews with over 50 current and former players and coaches, this book celebrates these remarkable women and their achievements against all odds.

  • I received an electronic galley of this title for reviewing purposes from netgalley.com

Soccerwomen by Gemma Clarke is a solid appetizer for both the novice and knowledgeable women’s soccer fan. One learns about the history of the women’s game and many of its finest players over the last three decades both in the United States and Internationally. The author does this in a brief vignette format (four to five pages at most) which has its positives and negatives as a style. On one hand, you don’t linger long on any one topic, but I personally ended up often wanting more. I would suggest that it is a good starter text for someone wanting to learn about women’s soccer from the ground up or if you’re someone who just wandered into a game and found yourself transfixed.
  • If you have a daughter that love soccer, this books provides a good history lesson in Women's soccer. The book includes trailblazers from all over the globe. The book does have a reoccurring theme of the struggle Women have faced in soccer with soccer being so male dominant. This includes the fight for equal pay for the USWNT team. The book also has the future faces of Women's soccer like Pugh and Lavelle though my daughter was a little disappointed because her favorite player Christen Press was not include
  • My niece read this. She's the soccer star in our family. She said it was really awesome to read about some of her heroes. The book kept her reading so that's a good thing. She said it took her into their lives as well as the game. She liked reading about how they approached the sport.
  • Gave this to my daughter who aspires to becoming a soccer star in her own right. She loves seeing all of these stories of woman who have made their mark in soccer.
